fifth flavor

The name for Fifth Flavor comes from an idea in Thai cooking. Many Thai recipes have similar ingredients, like lime juice, palm sugar or fish sauce. Balancing them in the way that is appropriate for each dish is essential in Thai cooking. If you combine the four common flavors of salt, sweet, sour and bitter in just the right way, it produces the fifth flavor of deliciousness.

about me

Hello, my name is Prem, short for Premmarin. I grew up in Thailand and lived there for 26 years before moving to the U.S., Ohio, for graduate school in Art Administration.

My husband and I make our home in the little college town of Kent, Ohio. I started cooking because I love eating! I am attracted by ingredients and the beauty of cooking techniques from different cuisines around the world. I cook by tasting, no recipes, just like my grandma and my mom. Every taste in the dish comes from memories and instinct. I am always proud of Thai food and want to share the authentic version with people. Asian cuisine, Japanese and Chinese are also the foods I love and have learned to cook over time.
